Mercedes-Maybach takes a big step forward. Literally. For the second time (after last year's G 650 Landaulet), the chic sub-brand Benz will build an SUV. The $ 200,000 Mercedes-Maybach GLS will come from Mercedes-Benz manufacturing facilities in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and is expected to leave the production line early next year. But before that, the big Benz shows itself in video.
A new spy video shows the tests of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS (camouflage) on public roads near the Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Germany. At first glance, the luxurious GLS does not stray from its conceptual three-star base counterpart – it shares many of the same body panels, facial features and overall shape. But take a closer look and you'll find some details that help distinguish the Maybach model.
The wheels are completely different, for one. Certainly, the five-spoke rims glued here could be used for prototypes, but we know that the Maybach model will get a new set of shoes compared to the standard GLS in both directions. This prototype also looks a little longer than the basic GLS. The GLS 2020 extends to 205.2 inches, giving it three inches more than the outgoing model. Maybe the Maybach version will be a bit longer.
We know that GLS Maybach could also have a new digital naming scheme. Mercedes-Benz has registered three trademarks for the GLS: 600, 680 and S680. Some of these digital ID plates that the company already uses on the S-Class abroad, but we assume that they will be available on the GLS Maybach worldwide.
The Mercedes-Maybach GLS will be available for sale in 2020. When completed, this car will be the most expensive in the United States, beating the current leader – the Acura NSX – by more than $ 40,000 (assuming the sticks of $ 200,000). A GLS 63 will also join the range.
