John Singleton, famous director of "Boyz n the Hood", will be removed from the survival system, according to his family

Oscar-nominated director John Singleton will no longer receive life support later in the day, his family told ABC News.

The director of "Boyz n the Hood" has suffered a stroke and has been hospitalized for more than a week.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton, will be removed from the survival system today," said the family. "It was an excruciating decision our family made for several days with the thoughtful advice of John's doctors."

"It's heartbreaking for us," added the family. "We are grateful to his fans, friends and colleagues for the outpouring of love and prayers in this incredibly difficult time."

Singleton was battling hypertension, according to his family.

Singleton's debut in making "Boyz n the Hood" earned him two Oscar nominations and made him the first African-American to earn the title of Best Director. He has also directed "Higher Learning", "Rosewood" and "Poetic Justice".

"John loved nothing more than giving opportunities to new talent and his films were known for his roles with actors that the industry was going to embrace." Talents such as Tupac Shakur, Regina King, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard's Ice Cube, Tyrese and Taraji P. Henson, "said the family.

He will leave his mother, Sheila, his father, Danny and his six children.
