A Democratic mayor of New Jersey resigned Sunday after being accused of interference in the electoral process.

Francesco Caramagna, the former Mayor of Elmwood Park, resigned after a complaint was filed earlier this month, the Bergen County Attorney's Office announced in a statement.

Aged 74, he was charged with completing a portion of the postal ballots and primary polling certifications for Elmwood Park registered voters.

On Monday, Caramagna was charged with meddling in the secrecy of the electoral process. Investigators allege that this is what he did between March 2017 and November 2018.

Caramagna is scheduled to make her initial appearance on May 22.
