Two 6th grade students in Tennessee have gone to school.
The students allegedly plotted to the South Cumberland Elementary School in Crossville, Tennessee, to shoot their classmates and faculty on the back of the Cumberland County Schools, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and the Crossville Police Department.
Last week, the school resource officer caught a rumor about the existence of a "hit list" that contained the names of students to be shot, officials said.
While investigators did not find a list, they did not have a hand-drawn map. The defendants allegedly prepared to hide in the locker room, to be used on the last day of school, officials said. They allegedly wanted to enter the building through the back door before shooting and dying by suicide before law enforcement intervened, according to the release.
The investigation also revealed "multiple conversations" between the two students in the past two weeks in which they devised the plot, officials said.
After the rumor was uncovered, "immediate steps" were taken to ensure the safety of the students, but the students were determined to be in danger, according to the release.
No weapons were found at the school or in their homes, and their parents were co-operating in law enforcement. The students were arrested by Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies and transported to the Cumberland County Juvenile Detention Facility. They were involved with the crime of murder and would remain in custody until they appeared in juvenile court.
"Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox said in a statement.
The students' identities were not released. They will be busy as juveniles, prosecutors said.
