It seems that Boston Bruins winger Brad Marchand is up to his old tricks.
Merchant could end up in hot water for his latest antics, this time following a cheap shot he delivered in the third period of Tuesday's third game in Columbus. While the Bruins were leading 2-1 late in the game and the puck was blocked by Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Marchand could not help catching an unsuspecting foe.
Columbus defender Scott Harrington was on his knees just outside the groove when Marchand knocked on the back of his helmet well after the whistle before he ran away immediately.
It was a dirty game, with which Marchand managed to get out of it, as the officials apparently missed it and no penalty was called. For this, Marchand is extremely fortunate, knowing that the Bruins have scored only one goal and that they have been greatly outclassed in the special teams throughout the series. (The winner of the Blue Jackets game in the third game was on the power play – one with a penalty from Marchand, nothing less.)
However, cameras have filmed the incident, which will undoubtedly be reviewed by the league's security department players. Relatively speaking, it was not the hardest or most dangerous blow to the head, but it's Merchant we're talking about – a controversial player with a long locker sheet and a historic suspension – and his reputation is likely to make him more average delinquent. Nevertheless, a fine seems more likely than a suspension, especially during the playoffs.
Columbus head coach, John Tortorella, has shown great restraint when he was asked about the incident after the match.
Anyway, the fact that Marchand pulls this kind of thing is not very attractive to the veteran winger, and it's worse when you consider the situation in which he was shot. The coaching staff is probably not happy with his willingness to potentially disadvantage his team late in a tight and decisive playoff game.
Marchand finished the regular season as the Bruins' top scorer with 100 points, but was whitened on the scoresheet in the first three games of the series. The Blue Jackets will lead Boston 2-1 and have a chance to push the Bruins to the brink of elimination with a home win at home this Thursday night.
