A plane carrying 73 veterans and their families from Illinois to Washington, DC, for a day tour of war memorials, was struck by lightning Tuesday but landed safely.
Sun County Airlines flight 8657 left Peoria for Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport after being struck by lightning in mid-flight, the Peoria Journal Star reported. On board were veterans of the Second World War, Korea and Vietnam.
"Lightning was not much. We did not even know that the plane had been touched before hearing about it, "said Joshua Eaker, who accompanied his step-father during the trip.
The airline said in a statement that the plane "had landed safely and without incident" and that "after the landing, maintenance officials found the presence of a flash. "
