Steven Rettinger was in Florida spending time with his father fighting cancer. He woke up abruptly around 3:30 pm Sunday. His 25-year-old family has just been shot in Waterloo around 2:30 am local time, he said.
He told the paper that his daughter was aspiring to become a dentist and was probably putting down her boyfriend after a shift at a local bar. His boyfriend was also touched and should survive, he said.
Police ask for help from the public
Micalla Rettinger was in the car with two passengers when she was hit on the neck, the police said. A passenger, Adam Kimball, 32, was injured and is being treated at a local hospital, while the third person was not injured, police said.
"There is no indication that the victims in this case were involved in any way in an activity that would have caused them to be targeted in this way," police said in a statement.
The Waterloo authorities are asking the public for help in identifying those involved in the shooting or who may have been hunting near the Cedar River. They offer a $ 7,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the manager.
Rettinger graduated in biology from the University of Northern Iowa in 2016. She was a member of the school's softball team.
"We are dying to learn about the senseless death of Micalla Rettinger," said David Harris, director of university sports. "This is heartbreaking news for our softball team … and for the entire campus, our thoughts and prayers are with Micalla's family and friends."
The softball team from northern Iowa honored her with a minute of silence before the home season finale on Tuesday night.
