Riley Howell, 21, a student in Charlotte, a native of the University of North Carolina, who died trying to arrest an armed man earlier this week, will be buried with all the military honors, Friday's Wells Funeral Homes said.

Howell was hailed as a hero for being rushed to attack Trystan Andrew Terrell, accused of having opened fire on campus Tuesday, causing two deaths and four injuries. The other deceased student was Ellis "Reed" Parlier, 19 years old.

Since then, Terrell has been charged with murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and two firearms offenses.

Police and classmates reported that Howell was in the classroom at the start of the shooting and was able to relieve the gunman, after which the police arrested the suspect.

"Absolutely, Mr Howell has saved lives," said police chief Charlotte-Mecklenburg Kerr Putney at a press conference this week, adding that he "had done exactly what we are training . "

Howell was a student in environmental studies and a cadet of the ROTC. More than 26,000 people had signed a WhiteHouse.gov petition asking Howell to receive a burial with all military honors.

"Riley was a ROTC cadet and would have served his country. He instead died while saving the lives of his classmates. For his heroism, we ask that Riley receive a funeral with all the military honors," reads in the petition.

Officials said that without Howell's actions, more lives would have been in danger.

A memorial service for Howell will be held at 5 pm on Sunday.
