According to the spokesman of the Waukegan Fire Department, an explosion was felt in Lake County Friday night at 9:45 pm, the spokesman said.

Around 10 pm, the Lake County Sheriff's Office issued an alert via social media, stating, "We are aware of a very strong explosion and earthquake in the Gurnee area. We work to determine the cause. "

About 20 minutes later, a message from the sheriff's office called the public to "stay out of Sunset Avenue, from Green Bay to Delany, Waukegan! Please allow first responders to conduct operations! The first responders in the area are on the scene of an explosion or fire. "

Megan Hener, who lives on Atlantic Avenue six blocks away from the scene, said she and her husband, Robert, had gone to the corner of Northwestern and Sunset Avenues and had posted on social media a photo illustrating the disappearance of the building.

"She was level, she is right in front of the Emission Control Station," she said, referring to a facility located in the state of Illinois, located at 2161, Northwestern Avenue.

Hener added that the ambulances "passed" near her where she was standing around 22.30. She estimated that the explosion occurred around 9:45 pm.

"We thought it was the place of propane (in Gurnee)," she said. "It shook our house and my home.

"It was huge," she added. "I have friends from Antioch, Grayslake and Libertyville who phoned to find out if everything was fine."
