China is the largest buyer of Iranian oil and the two countries have come together in recent years, with Iran becoming an important supporter of China's Belt and Road Initiative.
However, while it meets the end of the US sanctions waivers on Iranian oil, China must be careful not to compromise delicate trade negotiations with the United States.
Despite public opposition to US unilateral sanctions, China could abandon its Iranian oil imports to appease Washington.
