Former Democratic Representative Barney Frank said Pete Buttigieg's sexuality was an advantage for his 2020 presidential campaign.

Frank, who came out in 1987 and became the first openly homosexual Congressman, attributed Buttigieg's gay origin to his recent rise in polls.

"His homosexuality is an advantage and, if he was straight, I did not think he would come out as well," Frank told the Boston Globe.

"This draws attention to him and he earns points for his frankness and honesty and gives people a chance to assert their lack of bias," said Frank, who served in the House of Commons 1981-2013. "I think Beto O'Rourke may be sorry he's straight."

Buttigieg, 37, would be the first openly gay president when he went to the White House.

An average of RealClearPolitics poll data shows Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

Senator Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Is behind Buttigieg and ahead of O'Rourke, a former member of the Democratic Congress of Texas, in the average polls.

Buttigieg married her husband, Chasten, in 2018.
