No matter which way they choose to frame it, Ryme City is a place where any Pokemon fan would love to live. The sleeping Snorlax block wide avenues filled with cars, while Machamps directs traffic with his quadruple arms. The Aipoms hang from traffic signs, and the Golurks stand guard outside the gates of the police stations, where officers and detectives come and go with their companion Growlithes and Snubbuls. During Tim and Pikachu's investigation, they encounter dozens of different types of Pokémon: Greninjas attack them with watercolor stars, Charizards shoot them on fire, Ludicolos serves them to drink, Mr. Mimes must be interviewed (probably the best scene of the film). – and these Pokémon all look and act in accordance with the content of the source, cute or disgusting or terrifying as needed. Seeing these Pokémon in this live action context probably should not work, but it works.

Along the way, Tim and Pikachu also meet Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton), a young reporter (read: unpaid intern blogging) with an unfortunate Psyduck by her side. Smith is a friendly and credible reticent hero, while the distance that separates Goodman from his father plays in the way the story takes shape. Reynolds was an excellent choice for Pikachu, although you may sometimes have trouble hearing a yellow mouse and not some red-spandex-dressed superhero when he speaks. You are the worst, Chris Geere is extremely talented to play the sociopathic son of a CEO, while Ken Watanabe is a bit lost as a police lieutenant whom we only meet a few times.
