Hendricks revives the rivalry with a whirl of 81 shots

The Cubs (17-12) beat the Cardinals (20-12), first in the center of the National League, 4-0 behind the right-handed play by Kyle Hendricks. As our own Matt Snyder notes, Hendricks was the first to run a shutout on 81 shots or less since Aaron Cook (Red Sox) in 2012, as well as 13th overall. (The complete pitch data is only available since 1988.)

Hendricks (2-4) withdrew three shots without scoring and improved to 6-2 in 15 starts against the Cardinals.

Here is the breakdown of the 81 Hendricks locations:

With this win, the Cubs earned their fifth straight win (a one-season high) and reduced St. Louis' first place to 1-1 / 2 games. Game 2 of crucial series of three games is Saturday at 16:05 ET, with Michael Wacha and Yu Darvish facing the mound. Fans can broadcast the game region by region via fuboTV (Free Trial).

The highlight of the night: Machado takes Kershaw at the bottom

For the first time in his career, Manny Machado faced Clayton Kershaw on Friday. Both were briefly teammates last year. Now they are rivals of the division. The first tour took place in Machado. He took Kershaw into the second bridge:

It's an aesthetically pleasing dinger. Statcast measures it at 437 feet. Not as much as I would have guessed, but that then, it looked pretty.

The Red Sox finally win a sales start

For the first time this season, the Red Sox have won a match launched by Chris Sale. Hard to believe, is not it? Sale entered Friday's game with an average of 6.30 in six starts and 30 innings. Boston lost all six of these games (Sale personally was 0-5). The Red Sox lost nine games started by Sale all season. They lost six by May of this year. Crazy.

The good news: Dirty is gradually looking for better and better each time. He confused the White Sox, his former team, on Friday night and had his best start to the season.

Dirty now has a 2.84 ERA with 29 strikeouts in three starts and 19 innings against his former team. And the Red Sox are now 1-6 on his seven starts. Hey, I have to start somewhere.

Giants spoil Senzel's debut with a huge comeback

The debut of Nick Senzel's best team was a memorable night for all the Reds' bad reasons. Cincinnati lost an 8-0 lead against the Giants and finally lost 12-11 in 11 innings. Stephen Vogt scored a home win in the ninth and Evan Longoria won the match in eleventh.

The return of eight points is tied for the most important in the history of the Giants. As for Senzel, the rookie player turned center player went from 1 to 5 with two walks. Reaching the base three times is a very good start to the MLB, I would say. The rest of the game? Yuck. Look elsewhere, Reds fans.

Bullpen helps the Yankees overcome the Twins

Although Yankees star James Paxton lasted only three innings due to left knee pain, the New York pen was able to withstand a 6-3 victory over the Twins. Jonathan Holder threw two perfect innings before Adam Ottavino and Tommy Kahnle each showed up in one inning. Finally, Aroldis Chapman got the last three outs for his sixth save of the season on seven occasions. Gary Sanchez hit two home runs in the win:

The exhausted Yankees, with 13 players on the injured list, will still evaluate Paxton Saturday with an MRI. Here's Mike Axisa with more on the key loss.

Phegley has a career evening for A

Chances are that it will not be better than Friday night for A's receiver, Josh Phegley. Phegley scored 4 goals against 5 with two doubles – both with loaded bases – and a victory in the final victory against the Pirates. He drove in eight points.

Phegley is the first player with an eight-point game produced since Mark Reynolds had a 10-point game produced last July. He is the first A player with an eight-point game produced since Eric Chavez in 2001.

Gausman expelled in victory over Marlins

Nearly a year has passed since the warm-up of the Braves-Marlins, but the clashes between these two teams in the Eastern NL are still alarming. In the second leg of Friday's game (ATL 7, MIA 2), Atlanta right-hander Kevin Gausman was sent off for throwing behind the Marlins pitcher Jose Urena. It's Urena who hit Ronald Acuna Jr. with a fastball last August, which triggered the bench's release last season. You can read about both incidents here.
