Microsoft announces first "real" laptop

It's hard to believe that only two years have passed since Microsoft first announced the Surface Laptop. This is probably because the company had already gained a reputation with the Surface Convertible Tablets range. These computers have tried to associate the portability and convenience of the iPad to the touch screen with accessories, software and specifications that make it a "real computer".

It took a few years for Microsoft to determine exactly what made the standard surface work, but in 2015, the concept was really well defined with the Surface Pro 4. Nevertheless, many people wanted to see what Microsoft could do if it was applied his equipment chops in full swing to a more traditional laptop design. Enter the Surface Laptop, a computer without sophisticated hinges or removable keyboard. The particularity of its design was the wrist rest covered with fabric. But those who liked the design prowess that Microsoft had demonstrated with the Surface Pro, but wanted a more restful package on the lap, were delighted.

And for good reason: the Surface Laptop quickly became one of the best complete laptops, a device that strikes at a crossroads in style, capacity and price. It was essentially a modern MacBook Air running Windows, a device that interested many people.

Of course, the Laptop Surface was not launched without a slight controversy – but it was software and not hardware. You may recall that Microsoft briefly dealt with a variant of Windows 10 called Windows 10 S. It was a slightly more locked-down version of Windows 10 that only allowed the installation of apps from the Windows Store and did not allow users to browse the Web with Microsoft. Edge. To a certain extent, he was a competitor of Chrome OS, which had been very successful in the education market in 2017.

But consumers seemed more willing to accept the limitations of Chrome OS, given the amount of cheap Chrome hardware available. The Laptop Surface, meanwhile, has started at $ 999, which makes it more difficult to sell for education-oriented buyers. Initially, Microsoft offered free upgrades to Windows 10 Pro, while specifying that upgrades starting in 2018 would be billed at $ 50.

Fortunately, Microsoft quickly understood his mistake and began shipping the Surface Laptop with a complete Windows 10 Pro experience. The company still offers a simplified "S" mode for Windows, but Windows 10 S is for the most part a blip in Microsoft's long and twisty operating system history.

This is good news because there is almost nothing wrong with the Laptop Surface, which was upgraded last fall. Of course, it could use a USB-C port for charging and connectivity, but it's basically a puzzle. There are other cheaper, thinner, lighter or more powerful laptops. But it is not often that we come across a computer that really checks all the boxes for almost everyone who might be considering it.
