Join the club, James Paxton. It's not so exclusive, though.
The Yankees southpaw was placed on the 10-day wounded list after leaving the game on Friday night after three rounds in which left knee inflammation occurred. He is the 16th player on the squad for this season's injury list.
Paxton underwent an MRI on Saturday morning after complaining of a left knee pain the previous night, a problem that was bothering him recently. Before the announcement, manager Aaron Boone did not rule out Paxton's next scheduled start and said there was no knee swelling, only pain.
"It was enough so that I could not run my shots," Paxton said Friday night.
Paxton joins a star group of 13 Yankees, including Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorius, Dellin Betances, Aaron Hicks, Luis Severino and Aaron Judge. The Yankees recovered Miguel Andujar, who was activated on Saturday.
A significant acquisition of the Mariners during the offseason, the southpaw kicked off after a chaotic start, recording a 3-2 record with a 3.11 ERA, as well as 52 strikeouts in 37.2. Injuries have been a constant problem for Paxton, who has been on the IL (then on the DL) at least twice each of the last two years and once a season since 2014.
The Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Jake Barrett of Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre to replace Paxton on the roster.
