BMW must admit that there is a problem • Gear Patrol

According to a recent report by Coachwe can expect a four-door M2 on the road later this year. A more practical version of the best car that the brand is currently building? Fantastic. I can not wait. However, with the current naming convention of BMW, it will be called "M2 Gran Coupe", which is unnecessary and highlights the problem of the naming convention of the brand as a whole.

Of course, BMW is not the only brand to have abused the word "cut". Mercedes and Audi are big criminals, but Honda is also joining the party with its C-HR. "Coupe" is the French word for a fixed-roof and two-door car, or "cut" version of a four-door, which naturally translates into a car. BMW began using this naming scheme with the 6 Series Gran Coupe, a four-door version of a coupe that it no longer manufactures. She then applied the Gran Coupe modifier to Series 4, a two-door version of the 3-door, 4-door series. I understand the words and their meaning evolves, but it becomes a bit ridiculous.

This constant burst of new model lines and individual model names becomes uncontrollable. But there is a simple and obvious solution and it was something that BMW did but stopped: trusting customers can count without assistance. From 1975 to 1997, the BMW 3 Series is available in two- and four-door versions, their badges in no way indicating the number of doors they present. In 1997, BMW added a "C" to the coupe model names, and immediately stopped doing so for the next generation. And since '13, he has gone crazy and built brand new car lines with new compound names and useless numbers.

We now have four-door versions of the two-door versions of the four-door cars. This is a complex mess and, although BMW is not the only offender, it is undoubtedly its main author. The company seems to be transforming its entire lineup by renaming cars it already makes and adding models with only a slight change in style – and then continuing to build both. If there is a trend in the industry that has to die quickly, this is it.
