President Donald Trump on Sunday named Mark Morgan as the new head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The announcement comes as Trump administration staff has been reorganized as the president seeks to enforce a tighter immigration policy on the southern border.
In April, Trump had chosen Ronald D. Vitiello as a candidate for the post of chief of the ICE, saying that he wanted the agency to move in a "more difficult" direction.
Morgan has been chief of the border patrol for the last six months of the Obama administration. He was removed from office when the Trump administration took office.
Morgan has publicly endorsed Trump's call for a border wall and his decision to declare a national emergency at the border.
"The president had no choice, Congress failed, they continue to fail," Morgan said in an interview with CNN in February.
The change at ICE is only the last staff reshuffle regarding immigration policy. Kirstjen Nielsen retired as Secretary of Homeland Security in April, while Trump thought she was not doing enough to secure the country's southern border.
She was replaced by Kevin McAleenan, formerly the Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection.
