Jordan Harris Sheldon, 32, was transported to a hospital but died as a result of his injuries, said Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams at a press conference.

The suspect, Michael Aldana, aged 28, escaped and was later found in an apartment near the scene where the shooting took place. By the time the police entered the apartment, the suspect had died of a "self-inflicted bullet wound," Williams said.

Aldana, a resident of Mooresville, was known to police but had no history of violence, Williams said.

Williams did not give more details about the suspect or why Sheldon was arrested on Saturday night.

Sheldon was carrying a body camera and the investigators are reviewing the film, Williams said.

Sheldon's police dog, Ramone, was with him at the time of the shooting, said the police chief.

Sheldon had been in the police department for six years.
