President Donald Trump always says how much he loves the winners. But there is more and more evidence that many of this love may not be shared. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that he would not attend a White House celebration of the 2018 World Series Championship this week.
Cora, in a statement to El Nuevo Dia, formalized what he said, according to ESPN, in January when he first voiced concerns over the Trump administration's rescue policies over Hurricane Maria, which hit Puerto Rico in 2017 .
"Puerto Rico is very important to me," said Cora. "During the winter, I spent a lot of time at home visiting my family and friends. Unfortunately, we are still struggling, still struggling. Some people still lack basic necessities, others do not have access to electricity and many homes and schools are in very poor condition almost a year and a half after the passage of Hurricane María. "
Cora added, "Even though the US government has helped, the road is still long and it's OUR reality. I used my voice many times so that Puerto Ricans are not forgotten and that my absence (at the White House) is not different. As such, for the moment, I do not feel comfortable celebrating at the White House. "
Cora explained that it was a personal decision and had nothing to do with the Red Sox, writing: "I want to point out that it's a decision personal and that it does not reflect in any way the feeling of our organization. "
Cora joins a list of other Red Sox players who will not attend the celebration, including Mookie Betts, the most valuable American League player, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rafael Devers. In addition, University of Virginia men's basketball coach Tony Bennett announced last week that his team would refuse an invitation to the White House to celebrate their championship.
