Samsung has announced a new image sensor for mobile phones with higher resolution than anything comparable on the market. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor is a 64 megapixel sensor that uses the same 0.8 μm pixels as Samsung's current 48 megapixel component, which means it will be a physically larger sensor capable of to capture more light.
The Bright GW1 will produce 16 megapixel images by merging four pixels into one, as does the existing 48 megapixel sensors to produce 12 megapixel photos by default. Samsung's new sensor will also be able to descramble the color filter for high-resolution 64-megapixel shooting in good lighting. The 48-megapixel IMX586 sensor from Sony has a similar capacity, but not that of Samsung. Today, the Korean company also announces a new version of 48 megapixels offering the same functionality.
The 48 megapixel cameras are now commonplace on phones: Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and others all delivered devices with sensors. Samsung expects its 64 megapixel portion to go into mass production in the second half of this year. It would therefore not be surprising to see this feature appear on the flagship product charts of the end of 2019, especially if the market leader in image sensors follows suit.
