Despite only one victory in his last seven fights – in almost six years – former middleweight champion and mixed martial arts legend (MMA) Anderson Silva was put on the line tonight (Saturday, May 11, 2019) against Jared Cannonier, 10th in the world rankings, participates in the main event of PPV organized by UFC 237 in the Youth Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Make one in eight, as Cannonier finished Silva with a brutal kick in the first lap that seemed to cause significant damage to the Brazilian's knee.
The first 90 seconds of the match was essentially a game of cat and mouse, the two fighters trying to feel each other. Silva scored the first goal with a violent kick on the body, while Cannonier tried to pin him in a corner and wedge him along the fence. Silva turned around, but Cannonier was then able to shoot several powerful shots as he was stuck along the cage. Silva began to feel it towards the end of the round, making his typical "Spider" show, but Cannonier kicked back into the leg that caused Silva to fall painfully onto the canvas. Silva tried to defend himself momentarily, but referee Herb Dean was quick to cancel Cannonier before he could do more damage.
Silva – who broke his shin in a fight with Chris Weidman many years ago – screamed in pain after the fight. In fact, he could barely get on his stool to be examined by ring doctors. It looked like he had seriously damaged his knee … and the crowd was not happy about it, raining Cannonier with loud choruses.
It is clear that Silva, 44, has nothing to do at this stage of her career. Becoming old, it's all bad … and Anderson Silva proved it again tonight.
