A 49-year-old armed robbery suspect killed a Savannah police sergeant and killed another officer on Saturday night, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced.

According to a statement released Sunday by GBI, Edward Fuller III, 49, shot at Sgt. Kelvin Ansari and Agent Douglas Thomas. Ansari died as a result of his injuries. The police then shot Fuller, who died as a result of his injuries.

In any incident involving an officer involved in a shootout, the Savannah Police Protocol states that the GBI must investigate. GBI's preliminary investigation revealed that Fuller had stolen a person who was leaving the Boyz II Men Barbershop near the intersection of Bull Street and East 39th Street, after stealing money and other items after striking the victim with a weapon.

Officers, including Ansari and Thomas, arrived at the scene to begin their investigation. According to the statement issued by GBI, the officers thought Fuller had left the area, but he was in a nearby vehicle.

Officers were briefed on the vehicle's description, Savannah chief of police Roy Minter told a press conference on Sunday.

When Ansari walked near the vehicle, Fuller "went out and immediately started firing at officers," hitting Ansari and Thomas, according to the statement issued by GBI.

Thomas was shot in the leg, said Minter.

Fuller fled the scene on foot and rushed into the yard of a neighboring house.

Officers searched the area until Fuller came out of a shed in the backyard, pointing a handgun at the agents.

An unidentified officer shot Fuller.

Fuller, Ansari and Thomas were transported to the Memorial Health University Medical Center.

According to the press release, Ansari and Fuller were declared dead after rescue measures were taken.

Thomas was looked after and released.

"He is currently at home and recovering from his injuries," said Minter.

GBI will continue its investigation of the incident and will present its findings to the Chatham County Attorney's Office for review once the completion of the work.
