Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a Métis family in the 1980s and the dilemmas she faces in assimilating or staying true to herself. Bow's parents, Paul and Alicia, decide to move from a hippie community to the suburbs to better support their families. As his parents struggle to cope with the challenges of their new lives, Bow and his siblings move into an ordinary school in which they are not perceived as blacks or whites. The experiences of this family illustrate the challenges of finding one's own identity when the rest of the world can not decide on its membership.
