Several groups, ranging from civil rights and women's rights advocates to liberal associations, had opposed Truncale's candidacy, citing her previous comments ranging from immigration to abortion rights to mixed toilets.

In written comments to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Truncale said his comment about Obama "simply expressed frustration with what I saw as a lack of obvious patriotism on the part of President Obama."

The freshman senator had a back-and-forth relationship with Trump, whom he described as "phony, fraud" during the Republican primaries. The two then sat down for dinner after Trump had won the election and considered Secretary of State.
