Without warning, Rockstar has released a brand new update for Red Dead Online today, marking the end of its beta period. This great update adds more anti-grief features, online poker, a new revolver, new story missions and side activities, as well as a garment that the community was missing since its launch. This is a big step in the right direction.
Players can now visit various taverns and other places and play poker with others. The players want ponchos for a while and when I played today, I saw at least two dozen players who had bought the item to wear immediately. A heavy pistol, the Lemat revolver, was also added. It can be purchased at various stores in the game. This revolver has eight cartridges in its room and can even shoot shotgun cartridges, making it a very powerful and useful weapon. Beyond the new things to buy and the opportunity to play, Rockstar has also added new cooperative missions that extend the plot "Land Of Opportunities", in which your character helps a widow to take revenge on her recently killed husband. I will not mess up what's going on. However, in the three new missions, not much happens until the end, which seems to be the conclusion of this scenario and this series of missions. I am curious to see if there is more to come after this last mission or what new stories are added.
The new missions themselves are a good mix of action and experimentation. Some times during different missions, players are asked to quickly choose a role or position, for example to stay to help protect an NPC or to run after another. There is no pop-up for this; instead, the game allows you and your group to make these choices on the fly. A character will ask someone or a few people to do something, and you can do it or let other players do it. The process is organic and does not use a voting screen or anything like that. During my years with the new missions, I found that most of the groups worked well together and that the missions had never been undecided.
During a mission, players discuss with residents of the city and help them to visit various defensive sites around a small town. Players have the opportunity to choose where to place each resident at various pre-marked locations in the area, then help them protect themselves from a few waves of attacking bandits. This configuration process is different from other missions currently in the game. I would like to see future missions in Red Dead Online keep trying new things like this.
Great changes and additions have been made to the way players interact with each other in the open world. By relying on previous updates that prevented trolls from finding and killing peaceful players, this new update allows players to defend against hostile players without being identified as enemies or criminals. Previously, attacked players sometimes defended themselves and were punished in the process by lowering their honor counter or giving them a bonus.
Players can also choose between two new open world modes, either defensive or offensive. Offensive mode in the open world is how Red Dead Online has always worked: players can shoot at you, you can shoot them and you will both face the consequences. In defensive mode, players suffer less damage from attacks, can not be lassoed, and can not be locked by an automatic objective. Players attacking a person in defensive mode will be punished, and those who attack a defensive person will immediately be marked as offensive and punished.
All this is related to the new system of hostility. The more you are an asshole, the easier you are to find on the map. Rockstar also removed all daily challenges that required players to kill other players in free mode, another step to limit grief and trolling.
Today, I met only one fool who tried to steal my horse and shot me. I fought back, killed him, and was not penalized for that because they fired first and attacked me, which is good. The other people I met in the open world did not shoot at me or at others. It was a more peaceful experience, which I appreciate.
Many of these new additions make the community very happy. Through RDO Players willingly share ponchos and poker games. The atmosphere is very different from that of the last big update, which included even protests in play via a small problem. Some old players say they come back to the game because of this new update and how much better it is than previous updates.
This new update seems to be an important and positive step in the right direction. After previous updates filled with small changes, expensive items, or poor PvP modes, this new update is a huge improvement. It's hard to say what that means for Red Dead Online to be released from the beta when Rockstar announced their intention to continue updating it, but after today's changes, I look forward to the next step.
