An 8-year-old policeman accidentally fires at his mother during a baseball game

A woman was accidentally shot by her 8-year-old child at a baseball game in Tennessee Tuesday night, police said.

Mother and child were among 2,000 spectators at the Millington US Stadium that night, attending the University of Memphis baseball game against the University of Tennessee at Martin's annual WS "Baby "Howard Classic.

The child was playing in a World War II era jeep exposed to the stadium as part of a veterans recognition day, according to the Millington Police Department.

The child found an unsecured handgun inside the vehicle and thought it was a toy. The child took the gun and pulled the trigger, shooting a bullet that hit the mother, police said.

Officers received a call for shots fired shortly before 18:30. local hour.

The mother was taken to the local hospital in critical condition, police said.

The baseball game was suspended due to the incident.

The police refused to disclose the names of the mother and the child.

Investigators later determined that the unsecured weapon belonged to Charles McFarland, aged 76, who was later charged with reckless endangering of a deadly weapon. No obligation has been set yet, the police said.
