It seems Kevin Durant is not about to come back from his calf injury, after all.
It has been more than a week since the most valuable former player was injured in the fifth game of the second series against the Houston Rockets. Although we know that Durant would miss the sixth game of this series, he also missed the first game of the Golden State Warriors Conference Western Conference Conference against the Portland Trail Blazers.
After being re-evaluated before Game 2 on Thursday, Warrior General Manager Bob Myers announced that Durant would not travel with the team to Portland and would miss games 3 and 4 of the conference finals. The team provided an official update on the status of Durant and DeMarcus Cousins:
Warrior striker Kevin Durant, who was injured in the right calf in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinal against the Houston Rockets on May 8, has made good progress since the start of his rehab program a week ago. At this point, Durant is not ready for field work.
Center DeMarcus Cousins, who had a tear in the left quadriceps muscle in the second game of the first round of the Western Conference against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 15 and missed the last 11 games, progressed to the field, but is still not ready for live action.
At this point, it is expected that both players will be reassessed again in one (1) week. Durant and the cousins were examined by the medical staff of the team earlier in the day.
The Warriors also announced that DeMarcus' Cousins had progressed to "field work" after suffering a left quad ripped last month in Golden State's first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers. It is still believed that the Cousins could return to the team at some point in the playoffs.
The Warriors won easily against the Blazers in the first game, beating them 116-94 and never shooting in the final 46 minutes of the game.
The series is still long and it is optimistic to be able to return Durant, supposing that this series extends beyond four games. A potential game 5 would take place next Wednesday and a game 7, if necessary, would take place two Sundays to 10 days.
With the first game of the NBA finals on May 30, it would give Durant another two weeks to recover.
Although the Warriors could pass the Western Final without their top scorer, their fate is not as certain for the NBA Finals if they have to compete with Milwaukee Bucks led by Giannis Antetokounmpo.
In other words, it may be wise to rest Durant and his calf for the rest of the series, especially if the Warriors take a 2-0 lead over the Blazers after the second game.
