Drones have been able to avoid fixed obstacles for years, but researchers at the University of Zurich are striving to make them even more effective at avoiding moving objects.

As part of an experiment, the researchers recently released a video that shows an autonomous drone dodging and dodging a football launched in several scenarios.

The experiment was part of a project by Davide Scaramuzza's Robotics and Perception group at the University of Zurich, which recently published an article investigating the effects of perception latency on the speed with which robots can navigate an unknown environment.

To validate their analysis, the researchers equipped a drone with "event cameras" allowing it to detect and dodge objects projected in its path, according to their white paper. The project was first reported by IEEE Spectrum, IEEE's online magazine, a professional organization focused on engineering and applied sciences.

In the video, we see the drone avoiding a football thrown from different angles. In one stroke, he tilts subtly on the side to avoid the ball in real time, while another experience further into the video shows that it is spinning upwards so that the ball can go under it. The experiment used event cameras, which are special types of motion-sensitive sensors that can respond to changes in a scene in microseconds, the IEEE Spectrum report says.
