A powerful storm system that extends from Canada to Mexico threatens millions of Americans. More than 40 million people in 18 US states are preparing for storms that could last until the middle of next week, reports Omar Villafranca of CBS News.

There was an epidemic of violent storms during the night. Dozens of twisters were reported overnight in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Kansas, where eight tornadoes were reported in less than two hours.

Storm hunters in the state have captured the beginnings of a tornado throwing a semi-truck on the side. The team continued to follow the tornado that ripped the southwest of the state. A mobile home in bloom has been directly affected. No injuries have been reported.

Much of the damage involved power lines that had fallen to the ground and caused a bush fire.

Nebraska police said more than 1,000 were without electricity on Saturday morning.

More tornadoes should occur throughout the weekend. The National Weather Service also reports devastating winds, heavy hail and heavy rain from Texas to the Great Lakes.

"One can expect violent thunderstorms and sudden floods in parts of the Plains, Mississippi valleys and the Ohio Valley," the meteorological service said.
