The last episode is in many ways much better than anything we've seen this season, but the writing is, again, the Achilles heel of this series. Like a long time Game of thrones fan, this is not the destination for which I am not happy. To quote a different Stark, "part of the journey is the end" and this ending is perfect for these characters. This is the trip that is not so great, especially this season.
Spectators rushed through crucial scenes that could have dramatically changed the way fans reacted to Season 8 and eliminated logic and common sense, all to shock the audience unnecessarily. It is not surprising to see bad reviews for the last three Game of thrones episodes, and hear that more than 1.2 million people have launched a petition asking HBO to redo season 8 with "skilled writers" in just a few days. While some stars are not satisfied with the reaction of fans, Emilia Clarke, whose performance as Daenerys is undoubtedly one of the highlights of season 8, would not hesitate to put the season in context.
The actress said New Yorker that she was not aware of the petition to redo season 8. When asked what she wanted from a new session, she did not hesitate to answer:
Oh my God. Well, I can only talk to my own character and the people I'm in contact with during the show. But I wish I had more scenes with me and Missandei. I would have liked more scenes with me and Cersei.

Yeah. I would have liked more scenes between Gray Worm and Missandei. I would have liked to see a little more between Cersei … I have the impression that there were … The genocide was there. It was always going to happen. In a separate interview with Weekly entertainment, Clarke told how she had learned the fate of the character she had been playing for a decade. Game of thronesand the way she says it, it was a shock:

She read it again and again. She has read seven times, seven times, that she was reading the lyrics revealing the devastating fate of Daenerys Targaryen, a character she's been representing in the global HBO phenomenon for almost 10 years.

One of the many criticisms of Season 8 is Dany's bow and the fact that the audience is not sufficiently informed of the direction to take. Therefore, the moment she turns on King's Landing is a total surprise.
Clarke's initial reaction proves again that the critics are somewhat correct. If the actor who plays one of the main characters in the series did not see it coming, then how are we supposed to be mere mortals and HBO subscriber payers? Later in the interview, she admits to having received notes from filmmakers and animators to act differently in certain scenes over the years. So, in retrospect, that can make sense to her. But, again, it's not so clear to the public:
Whatever the origin of last season's narrative, Throne's writers have been planning Dany's fate for years and have predicted the dark turn of the screenplay. In previous seasons, producers sometimes asked Clarke to play a scene a little different from what she was expecting for an apparently heroic character. "Many times I have been like," Why are you giving me this note? "" Clarke says. "So yes, that made me look back at all the notes I've ever had."
