The Windows 10 May 2019 update is being rolled out for everyone … slowly

To avoid the repetition of the problems experienced by the October 10, 2008, version 1809 update, Microsoft has taken a very measured approach to the release of the May 2019, version 1903 update, with both a long time as a candidate for publication and a lot less aggressive deployment to Windows Update.

This deployment begins today. While you previously had to be part of the Insider program (or have a source such as an MSDN subscription) to download and install the 1903 version, it is now accessible to everyone through Windows Update.

However, it is unlikely that Windows users will see the update automatically installed for several months. Initially, only people who have explicitly visited Windows Update and clicked "Check for Updates" will be offered the 1903 version, and even then they will have to explicitly choose to download and install the update. This is part of Microsoft's attempt to make Windows Update less surprising: Feature updates are offered separately from regular updates because feature updates take a long time to install and regular updates do not take place. are not (or at least they should not be). This installation experience requires the use of version 1803 or 1809, as well as the most recent monthly fix, also released today.

The update is also available for those who download the update tool or the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.

Starting in June, the update will be sent to users currently on Windows 10 version 1803, this version ceasing to receive updates in November. And companies using patch management systems can plan their deployments as they see fit. Beyond that, however, Microsoft indicates that, for the moment at least, the update will not be automatically installed. This marks a big change from previous Windows 10 feature updates and means that the adoption of the update may be seriously hampered.

Notable features of the 1903 release include better Kaomoji support, application sandboxing, and Cortana separation and search.
