Tornadoes landed near Joplin, Missouri, on the eighth anniversary of a huge tornado that devastated the city and killed 161 people.
Jasper County Emergency Management Director Keith Stammer said a tornado had started Wednesday night southwest of the small town of Carl Junction and had shifted to the northeast. passing through the cities of Oronogo and Golden City. Carl Junction is about 4 miles north of Joplin.
According to Stammer, the authorities were conducting a house search in Carl Junction to determine if anyone had been injured, but no injuries were reported. He added that the roofs of the houses had been damaged, as well as fences, farm buildings and utility poles.
Stammer said officials will not know the actual extent of the damage before the morning.
