The transition to a new butterfly keyboard mechanism is the the least popular design decision of recent memory. After a flood of negative comments about locked and defective keys, the company continued to upgrade its technology with subtle solutions.
Just two days ago, Apple released another update – a solution that it believes will solve many of the system's current problems. Today, iFixit has opened the new model by identifying some of the changes below. The adjustments seem minimal and the iFixit people are always aware of what's new, but things seem to match what the company told us.

The keyboard mechanism of the MacBook Pro has undergone a hardware change. Apple says this new keyboard mechanism composition will dramatically reduce the double / type problem.
Some hardware has been modified, including the membrane that the company added last year to reduce keyboard volume and (hopefully) help keep debris out of the way. The material went from an opaque silicone (likely) to transparent nylon (probably).
The dome, which provides the rebound when typing, appears to have been updated, as well as to protect it from wear that could have contributed to failure.
"There are a myriad of possible reasons for this switch to crack or run," writes iFixit. "Manufacturing defects, old fatigue, prolonged heat, moisture, other component release gases and corrosion are the main culprits."
As with previous updates, Apple has chosen to remain silent about exactly what has changed. This time, however, the company includes the new models as part of its keyboard service program, just in case.
