Northwest Indiana may have been spared a violent Memorial Day storm that swept the Chicago area in northwestern Indiana.

Weather observers reported a tornado hit near the Illinois-Indiana border near Dyer at approximately 4:30 pm Monday.

Dyer City Councilor, Steve Kramer, has posted a photo of a funnel cloud on social media, but no damage has been reported in the immediate aftermath.

Kramer said that he was barbecuing in his garden when the first cloud of wall fell.

"And before you know it, all the sirens sounded," he said. "My wife started emptying a closet."

He said that a funnel appeared for about three minutes and then began to collapse.

He said he took a video of a second funnel cloud and posted it on Snapchat.

The National Meteorological Service reported severe storms with high winds accompanied by lightning and hail.

Possible tornado formations have been reported in the Hobart and Merrillville areas, but no hits have been confirmed.

Around 17:17, the inhabitants of Valparaiso were ordered to shelter because a cloud of wall in increasing rotation would have been reported in the vicinity, according to the meteorological service.

A flood warning was in effect until 19 hours.

On Monday night, the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. reported more than 1,500 customers without electricity in northwestern Indiana.
