Vino Rosso moves closer to the favorite gift box to win the Gold and Quarter Cup in Santa Anita
Stole and Vino Rosso's Stable stables were shipped to California for Monday's Gold Cup Grade 1 at Santa Anita. They won the first prize of the race at $ 500,000, a gain of three to five for a favorite gift box. Another invader, Lone Sailor, was third with a 5 1/4 length for coach Tom Amoss, and Mongolian Groom was fourth in the group of seven older riders.
Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, Vino Rosso – a 4-year-old Curlin, whose only previous win in progressive rankings was won by G2 Wood Memorial last year – traveled 1 1 / 4 miles on a fast main track 03:00. He wore 121 pounds under the terms of the Gold Cup Compensation – a pillar of the deceased Hollywood Park – four pounds less than Gift Box.
Vino Rosso paid $ 10.20 for the win.
Vino Rosso was caught by four lengths around the first corner and from behind, while Blitzkrieg made quick runs of: 22.97, 46.37 and 1: 10.70 for the first six stages.
The gift box and jockey Joel Rosario, never far behind the favorite, headed towards the leader at the approach of the turn, but Vino Rosso quickly joined him, who wore him after one kilometer in 1: 36.04.
"Todd told me that he was ready for a mile and a quarter, I talked to Mike Repole on the phone and he said to thank him wholeheartedly because it's him who I gave instructions to win the race. So thank you Mike and thank you Todd! We come from seven eighths, we knew we were going to be close.
"I knew the pace would be fast early and I just wanted to stay close," Velazquez said. "He broke very well and we settled there. When it was time to leave, we knew we had to hire Joel (Rosario) to play the game because he was the horse to beat. And we did the job. Vino Rosso seemed to have organized everything today.
"At first they all put themselves in a position and I thought I was well placed," Rosario said. "I guess it was just the second best today. I used it a bit early to get my place, but it settled in and was very comfortable afterwards. All he was doing was right, he was just a little tired at the end.
"I still think he's one of the best handicapped horses in the country and he's going to improve. I had the trip I wanted, the other horse did a better race today. "
The win was the fifth in 12 starts for Vino Rosso, produced by the Street Cry Mythical Bride mare. Vino Rosso was raised in Kentucky by John D. Gunther. Vino Rosso made his third start in 2019 in the Santa Anita Gold Cup. He won the Stymie on March 9 at his first start since the G1 Travers last year in Saratoga, and then finished fourth behind G1 Carter's World of Trouble Disorder with seven stadiums.
