Cookie, a six-week-old chick named Eagle who had a live chat with a webcam last month, died Monday, according to the US Forest Service in Southern California.
The Forest Service wrote on Facebook that an end-of-season storm at Big Bear had lowered the temperature to 26 degrees and brought several inches of snow, making hypothermia the likely cause. Another chick died last year under similar conditions. Cookie looked weak and had trouble breathing, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley.

The Forest Service added that "although it is disappointing to lose the chick, it is not surprising either." The bald eagle chicks have a mortality rate greater than 50% over of their first year of life because of their flying feathers and their difficulty in retaining body heat. .
Even the mother of the chick had problems Monday.
Once they have learned to hunt and feed themselves, said the Forest Service, bald eagles have a better chance of reaching adulthood.
"And for that, we hope to see the remaining chick leave next month to learn to do just that!" Wrote the Forest Service.
