Joey Hauser, a transfer that changes the game

Michigan State Basketball clinched a decisive transfer on Tuesday afternoon with Joey Hauser, a former top 60 target at the time of recruitment.

The wait is finally over. After weeks of speculation, lump sums and potential splits, the Hauser brothers announced their transfer destinations.

At first, the conversation was in Wisconsin for both, but after all visits, it seemed more likely that a split would occur, meaning that Joey Hauser would head to the state of Michigan while his elder brother, Sam, was tied to Virginia.

This is not a big deal for the Spartans in the short term (he should be eligible in 2020), it's huge for the next 2-3 years when guys like Xavier Tillman and Cassius Winston will be gone.

Hauser could become a leader of the team and help not only to train the youngest when he is finally eligible, but before that, when he is part of the screening team. Instead of teaming up with his brother again, he defended his interests and chose Michigan State.

Tom Izzo must also be ecstatic. He recruited Joey, one of the 60 best rookies of the class of 2017, just out of high school before choosing Marquette. He had a second chance to reach it and did not miss it. It's one of the biggest transfers for Izzo in recent history, comparable to Bryn Forbes' – Eron Harris and Brandon Wood were equally important.

After his freshman season in red lingerie, Hauser was named to the Big East All Freshman team, averaging nearly 10 points and five rebounds per game. He can shoot from anywhere on the ground and this ability to stretch the defense will pose a new scoring threat in 2020-2021.

The state of Michigan took gold by landing Hauser and protecting the scholarship limit. The Spartans did not need to push back the striker by getting both and got the best scenario that would allow them to always recruit the best targets in the 2020 category. Izzo is hungry for this second title.
