An important and dangerous tornado has been reported west of Kansas City, Kansas, the National Weather Service reported. The NWS has launched a "tornado emergency" in the region known as Legends Outlets, near Kansas Speedway, where NASCAR races are held.
Damage reports were not immediately available.
The NWS then extended the tornado warning to the entire Kansas City area, including the Missouri side.
"KC's heart is in this tornado warning! It's a dangerous situation. TAKE SHIP NOW!" the NWS Kansas City office tweeted. The tornado warning for the Kansas City subway was completed at 19:35. CT, but there were dangerous weather reports moving across the Missouri.
Assistant Director Jillian Roderigue told CBS affiliate KCTV that Douglas County Emergency Management had been informed of a tornado around 6:10 pm Monday near the small community of Lone Star, southwest of Lawrence.
A hospital in Lawrence, Kansas, announced that 10 patients had been admitted. Brett Anthony, a KCTV meteorologist, found damage on the south side of Lawrence.
The city of about 100,000 inhabitants is home to the University of Kansas. It lies about 50 miles southwest of Kansas City International Airport.
