At the podcast: react to the situation of Odubel Herrera

Phillies goaltender Odubel Herrera was arrested for domestic violence Monday night in Atlantic City (see history).

Let's try to answer a few questions on the subject:

How did the Phillies discover?
Bonnie Clark, Phillies vice president of communications, learned of the arrest around nine thirty on Tuesday morning by a law enforcement official in Atlantic City and immediately phoned general manager Matt Klentak, who was in a meeting to prepare the project. In one text, Klentak asked Clark if the case could wait. She replied, "No. Urgent."

What did Klentak do?
He immediately alerted his superiors, including the owners. He followed the protocol and alerted Major League Baseball. He then called the director, Gabe Kapler, who was at a Starbucks.

Did the Phillies talk to Herrera?
Yes. Klentak and Kapler telephoned Herrera at his home to inform him that he was on administrative leave for seven days, in accordance with MLB regulations. They told him not to show up at the stadium.

Klentak would not offer details on the conversation, but he stated that Herrera had excused himself. For what, the incident, the distraction? "I think of all the above," said Klentak.

The Director General spoke of the seriousness with which the organization had taken the accusations and the case of domestic violence as a whole, but he had not been able to speak specifically about it because of the ongoing investigation.

Kapler also avoided talking about details because of the ongoing investigation. He did, however, offer this:

"I can speak for myself and say that it is deeply disturbing," he said. "It's not something you want to treat. Personally, I do not feel very well at that time. "

As a player, Kapler and his ex-wife, Lisa, ran a foundation that helps victims of domestic violence, so that he was personally troubled by the news.

What happens during the seven-day administrative leave?
MLB, together with law enforcement officials, is investigating the charges against Herrera. If it takes longer to gather facts, permission can be extended. If the MLB does not find any wrongdoing, Herrera could eventually be reinstated. These "leaves" are often extended.

Is Herrera paid during the leave?
Yes. He continues to receive his salary of $ 5.35 million.

Herrera can he be suspended?
Yes. The baseball commissioner, depending on the results of the investigation, may suspend Herrera. Any suspension would be without pay. The Commissioner manages all discipline in these areas.

How long can these suspensions last?
Chicago Cubs fieldman Addison Russell recently completed a 40-game suspension.

Can the Phillies cancel the Herrera contract if he is found guilty?
No. The domestic violence agreement between the MLB and the players' association does not allow it.

If the Phillies decided to release Herrera, they would be paid for the rest of his contract – about $ 23.7 million by 2021.

Did we see Herrera's last as a Phillie?
"I think it's premature to speculate at this point," Klentak said. "There is not enough information about what happened."

What do Herrera's teammates say?
Kapler organized a team meeting to discuss the situation with the players. The players were rather deaf.

"I do not know enough to comment," said Scott Kingery. "We are all ready to play and try to win a match tonight."

For the record, all players attended a morning seminar in the spring on the issue of domestic violence.

How did the Phillies fill the list of Herrera players?
Private Nick Williams was recalled from Triple A.

With Herrera, who plays in the middle of the field?
Andrew McCutchen moved from the left field to the starting position on Tuesday night. Williams received the call in the left field. This will probably be the way the Phillies go against the right-handed pitchers. Kingery will likely start in the middle with McCutchen on the left. Kapler confirmed that it was the plan. Roman Quinn will likely begin a minor league re-education mission later this week. He could enter the center's image when the Phils return from the west coast on June 7th.
