WASHINGTON (AP) – Retired General Colin Powell and his wife, Alma, are "two people to really admire," President Donald Trump said Sunday.

Trump congratulated the Powell at an annual gala at Ford's Theater, where they received the Lincoln Medal alongside American political comedian Mark Russell. Since 1981, the theater society awards the medal each year to people whose work, achievements or personal qualities embody the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln, murdered at the theater in 1865.

"We want to preserve this legacy and the precious legacy of this center," said Trump, accompanied by his wife, the first lady, Melania Trump, honorary chair of the gala. "I would also like to congratulate the recipients of tonight's Lincoln Medal, a man I respect very much, General Colin Powell and his wife, Alma. And maybe even more respect for you, Alma.

Trump thanked the couple for its services in the United States, stating, "You have been exceptional. Two people to really admire.

Powell, a Republican, ended a 35-year career in the military by becoming chairman of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff headed by President George H. W. Buisson.

He was also a National Security Advisor and Secretary of State for President George W. Bush. Alma Powell has worked with several nonprofit and charitable organizations. Colin Powell also helped launch the America Promise Alliance, a youth support organization.

Russell's career as a political humorist dates back to the Eisenhower administration. Trump said that Russell was "someone I had used to look at."

Trump also spoke about attending the gala for years to come, evoking his reelection in 2020.

"This is an event we hope to be here, what are you counting? Six more times, is that it?

Earlier Sunday, Trump was on stage while the pastor of a church in northern Virginia had asked God to give him the wisdom to lead the country.

Trump was with David Platt, pastor of the McLean Bible Church in Vienna, while Platt was asking for it as part of a national day of prayer for Trump, convened by Reverend Franklin Graham.
