Georgia's Football Wins Another Florida Victory, This Time on the Recruitment Trail

Florida fans were confident Friday. That's when the 4-star prospect Warren Brinson announced its finalists. One of those schools was Florida, which he had visited two weeks ago.

The other school was Georgia. You may remember that Brinson was a unique engagement in Georgia, but he kept his promise to Georgia after selecting many offers. Hitting a player after the disengagement is not unknown – Georgia has made it into the 2018 category with linebacker Adam Anderson – but these prospects end up choosing a different school more often.

Given the fact that shortly after Brinson announced his finalists, a number of recruiting analysts noted in the 247Sports crystal ball forecast that Brinson ended up choosing the Gators. The crystal ball, although it is not always 100% accurate and indicative of what the player thinks, allows recruited recruitment analysts to give their opinion on prospects for success. It was clear then that Brinson looked set to become a Florida Gator.

Except that he was not there. On Saturday, Brinson announced that he was once again engaging with the Bulldogs.

It was just the last recruit win for the Bulldogs, when it was more of a disappointment for Florida in the off season.

For Georgia, Brinson is the 11th commitment of the 2020 recruiting class and the fourth defensive tackle. He joins Jalen Carter, Jamil Burroughs and Nazir Stackhouse as the defensive tackle enters the class. In Georgia, he is the lowest ranked player who uses the 247Sports Composite ranking, while remaining # 339 in the category.

His commitment puts Georgia 4th in the 2020 hiring cycle. The Bulldogs beat Miami hurricanes and moved away from the Gators, which ranks seventh. All three teams in Georgia have at least four members in the 2020 category. Only Clemson has a higher average commission ranking than Georgia.

As for Brinson's engagement in the Georgia-Florida rivalry, that's another scathing defeat for the Gators. Florida had a lot of momentum early in the off season. The Gators won a stellar victory over Michigan in the Peach Bowl and made some solid commitments. Florida ended National Signing Day with # 9 in the country – far behind the No. 2 ranked Bulldogs of Georgia.

But it seems that since Florida coach Dan Mullen launched a very public blow to Kirby Smart and Georgia in the case of Justin Fields, that momentum was wasted. The Gators saw their highest scoring sign – Chris Steele – being transferred to Oregon, while two more members of the 2019 rookie class will not be with the team this fall.

Florida has also seen a number of its 2021 commitments back on their promise to participate in the program. And although the Gators have added up games against Texas, their other important addition to the schedule came against Colorado.

Georgia has meanwhile surpassed Florida in the recruitment rankings in 2020 after a slow start. And the Bulldogs have become the most aggressive team in the country when it comes to planning for their future Power Five opponents as their matches are played against players like Oklahoma, Clemson, Texas and Florida State.

It is quite clear that there is a marked difference in the current perception between Georgia and Florida. And that's even before we understand how Georgia has owned the Gators on the field in the past two seasons.

Brinson might not be the biggest recruiting win for Georgia this round. But as for how much he had to sting Florida fans, it was a great win for the Bulldogs.

The baseball season in Georgia is coming to an end

The baseball season in Georgia had been excellent until the Bulldogs faced the state of Florida on Saturday. Georgia was then eliminated 12-3 and was faced with the daunting task of winning three games in two days to qualify for the Super Regional.

The Bulldogs easily won the first game, while Georgia stormed the Florida Atlantic 13-0. Georgia should then beat the state of Florida twice, once Sunday and once again on Monday.

But instead of continuing the dream season – the one in which the Bulldogs won 46 games and 21 competitions against the SEC – the state of Florida hit Georgia again, beating the Bulldogs 10-1.

"I want to say that I enjoyed the training of this team," said Scott, Georgia baseball coach. Said Stricklin. "They had a ton of injuries this year and the guys continued to progress one after the other. It was so nice to be around them every day. I know our fans loved watching them play. It's a fun team to watch because we can do a lot of different things and win in different ways. I hate that it ends so.

For the second consecutive season, Georgia lost as a regional host. Last season, the Bulldogs lost to Duke in the regional game.

As the weekend approached, Georgia had given more than 10 points in a game just four times during the season. The obvious strength of this team is its pitching staff. Throughout the year, the Bulldogs relied on a timely strike to win big wins, as was the case against Arkansas and Texas A & M in the SEC tournament.

But Georgia took a big lead in the two defeats against Florida State, depriving the team of these difficult situations. And taking into account the two defeats of Florida State, Georgia scored a 0-6 gap by giving up more than 10 points.

For the Bulldogs follow-up, a number of key contributors are likely to be calling in this week's draft MLB. Seniors like John Cable and LJ Talley will be leaving next year, while Tony Locey, Aaron Schunk and Tucker Maxwell will all have to make the decision to return or not for their senior season.

The Georgian pitching team is expected to be performing again next year, as both players return. And it is clear that Stricklin is able to form a great team. The future of baseball in Georgia is as promising as it has ever been in the last few years. Unfortunately, we are still waiting next year with this group.
