Godzilla: King of the Monsters has propelled Disney's Aladdin to the top of the US box office this weekend, winning an estimated $ 49 million (38.7 million pounds).
Despite the assumption at the top, analysts have described the beginning of the monster remake as disappointing.
Costing $ 200 million, critics have been lukewarm for the film, starring Vera Farmiga and Kyle Chandler.
His total for the three-day weekend was a long way from his predecessor's $ 93 million (73.6 million pounds) debut in 2014.
The plot of the film is centered on a group of eco-terrorists who steal a sonar device developed by scientist Emma (Farmiga) to control Godzilla, while her ex-husband (Chandler) had been recruited to find him.
The new release is the first of Strange Things' Blockbuster, Millie Bobbie Brown.
Karen Krizanovich, film critic, told BBC News: "Godzilla is reserved for fans … Ignore human history and marvel at monsters, big planes and the main actors.

Another critic, Jason Solomons, added: "The brand remains strong as children all over the world want to see Godzilla, and even if this episode is a mess on the screen, you have the feeling that everyone is waiting the big contest Godzilla vs Kong, coming soon …
"So, as a filler, it does a job, but it should also serve as a lesson for understanding the tone – it needs more cornness in movie B – and knowing that everything everyone wants to see, they are monsters who are fighting each other, not humans crying. "
The other critics had even more reservations.
Simran Hans, of The Guardian, has described it as "bestial in every way", giving it one out of every five stars.
Ben Travis, who was writing for Empire Online, was equally scathing: "What you have left is a catastrophic blockbuster, stupid and boring, as numb and unsatisfactory as the worst Transformers movies.
But not everyone was impressed.
Collider's editor, Steven Weintraub, described it as "awesome", adding: "It's all I wanted the last movie to be, but it was not the case . "

The original Japanese film, Gojira, was released by the Toho studio in 1954 and two years later, an Americanized version was released in the United States.
Gojira spawned a series of follow-up films, including Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla Raids Again and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.
Godzilla: Final Wars and Shin Godzilla are among the most recent films in the franchise.
Of the most famous foreign versions, Tristar published Godzilla in 1997, but was not well received.
Gareth Edwards' Legendary Pictures, also known simply as Godzilla, was a box office hit, from which the new sequel – directed by Michael Dougherty – got the go-ahead.
Godzilla vs Kong is expected to come out next year.
Aladdin of Guy Ritchie, second at $ 42.3 million (£ 33.4 million) and biopic Elton John Rocketman, third at $ 25 million (£ 19.7 million), complete the rest of the top five at the north box office -American.
Fourth place goes to the Ma thriller, with $ 18.3 million (£ 14.5 million), with Octavia Spencer, winner of an Oscar.
Keanu Reeves' John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum took $ 11.1m (£ 8.7m) to finish fifth.
