Tesla's CHAdeMO fast charge adapter is now compatible with Model 3 (updated: Tesla rear tracks)

Tesla has sold a CHAdeMO quick charge adapter for S and X models for quite some time now. When Model 3 used the same plug as the S and X models, users assumed that the adapter would work with Model 3, but early tests showed that this was not the case.

That seems to have changed today with an update of the Tesla Shop, which now indicates that the Tesla CHAdeMO adapter is compatible with the "North American Model S, Model X and Model 3". It has also been added to "adapters". accessories section of model 3.

Update: Shortly after this article, Tesla has again changed the text in his shop and now indicates that "CHAdeMO is not compatible with the model 3", which is in contradiction with the page of this day (which you can see via Wayback Machine).

The three cars operate on Tesla's own Supercharger network, which is currently the benchmark for public fast charging.

CHAdeMO is another type of catch that is widespread in Japan, although it is less common in the United States and the European Union. Most automakers have opted for SAE CCS technology for fast charging. Only a few Asian claimants still include CHAdeMO plugs on their cars.

Tesla says that their cars will eventually be able to load on all "convincing" public fast charging networks, in addition to its own Supercharger network, but we do not have a specific timetable for this. Tesla recently launched a CCS adapter for the European S and X models, although this adapter is not available in North America (at least not yet).

We contacted Tesla about this change, but we received no immediate response. So far, no owner has tested its adapters on a model 3 for compatibility, and we do not know if it's enabled or needs to be enabled through a software update. . If you have already tried this, do not hesitate to tip us via our contact page or by email at [email protected].

UPDATE: Tesla has changed its website again by deleting the text indicating that the CHAdeMO adapter is compatible with Model 3. The site now indicates that "CHAdeMO is not compatible with Model 3." This element still appeared in the "adapters" section of as shown in the screenshot below, the Model 3 store, but also disappeared from this section.

Electrek's Take

For many, fast loading is a necessary ability for an EV. While most homeowners spend little time charging and leaving their homes fully charged every morning without having to recharge their batteries quickly during the day, it is felt that if the charging lasts longer long or is less accessible to the public than service stations, an EV is a non-starter.

So anything that makes it easy to charge, increase availability, or add high-speed charge access for homeowners is a good thing.

This will not be necessary for most homeowners because most of them will fit perfectly with daily home loading and overeating during travel, but for some homeowners this could help a lot. So it's great to see this finally available.
