A young, healthy Texan couple on a dream vacation in Fiji died suddenly after contracting a mysterious illness.

The families of David and Michelle Paul said the Fort Worth couple had begun to feel bad the day before they left Fiji and returned home two weeks ago.

"They knew something was going on in their bodies and were able to get to the hospital," Michelle's sister-in-law, Tracey Calanog, told local KVUE television.

"Anything can happen," she added through tears.

According to friends, the Air Force veteran and his wife loved to travel and tried to slip away one by one, leaving behind their young son, David's daughter from an earlier relationship and their dog, Zooey. .

According to Calanog, Michelle died first, then David, before it could be flown to Australia for treatment.

An investigation into the cause of their deaths is under way, but a recent warning from the World Health Organization warns of a deadly strain of the flu, including in Fiji where it "particularly affects young adults" .

A US State Department official confirmed the deaths of Michelle and David Paul in Fiji at KVUE and said they were monitoring the investigation.

The couple's children were with relatives, but their beloved dachshund was left in an unknown kennel and could not be found immediately.
