We all know what a Magic 8 Ball is, yes? The toy you shake and respond to random questions? It's pretty innocuous in every way, so this news is as strange as intriguing.
The deadline reports that Blumhouse Pictures, the company behind Halloween, Going out, paranormal activity and so many others, have teamed up with the Mattel toy company to make a movie based on the Magic 8 Ball. Jeff Wadlow, the director of Kick Ass 2 and from last year Truth or Dare will lead and co-write with Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach.
"As Mattel fans and their iconic brands, we are excited to bring to life Magic 8 Ball, one of their most famous toys, and meet all expectations," said Jason Blum, President of Blumhouse, at the deadline. "We look forward to partnering with Mattel Films to bring this project to the big screen and create a memorable experience for moviegoers."
The key quote is "against expectations". What expectations? That you made a movie with a toy? At least with the Ouija films, this toy has a sinister connotation. You speak to the dead. This is not what a Magic 8 Ball does. And yet, you have the impression that this is what will happen here. Or maybe it's Blum's expectations.
"Since the 1950s, Magic 8 Ball has inspired the imagination, suspense and intrigues from generation to generation," said Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films at Deadline. "This iconic toy has an integrated connection with fans and untapped potential for storytelling."
Sure. A Blumhouse Magic 8 Ball movie is more interesting than an animated movie of Magic 8 Ball. But the jury is absent until we learn more about taking Wadlow.
Let's move on to the object itself.
Will this film be good?
