Samsung joins AMD to integrate Radeon graphics with smartphones

AMD grants a license to use its graphics technology to Samsung for its future mobile chips. Samsung will pay AMD access to its recently announced RDNA graphics architecture and should integrate it into its own ARM-based Exynos processors. RDNA will also power AMD's future Navi desktop GPUs.

The agreement gives AMD's graphics technology another home-based calling platform. When most people think of Radeon graphics, they think about graphics cards for desktop or laptop, but the technology is also used in game consoles such as PS4 and Xbox One, and will also be used in future service Google's cloud games, Stadia. Perhaps most surprisingly, it is that AMD's graphics technology is also present in some processors produced by its rival Intel.

AMD's RDNA architecture will likely replace the ARM-designed Mali GPUs currently used by Samsung in its Exynos chips, which means that the technology may not be available in all the countries in which Samsung sells its phones. The South Korean manufacturer tends to offer phones with different countries. Most countries in the world have access to handsets equipped with Exynos chips, but in the United States, Canada, China, Japan and Latin America, its phones use Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, equipped with Adreno branded graphics processors . It is interesting to note that this graphics technology belonged to AMD before it sold its combined division to Qualcomm in 2009.
