Astros slides in front of errant sailors
SEATTLE – The Mariners' defense is destructive, a mixture of horrific and hilarious fundamental follies for a team that takes a "step backward" during the 2019 season. Sixty-nine mistakes made in Monday's game against the Astros were the biggest league team.
FanGraphs formulates a metric called "recorded defensive tracks". The Astros are second at 54. Teams near the middle of the league recorded a score between 0 and 20. The Mariners have accumulated a negative score of 51. Monday has sought to melt this surprising statistic.
The Astros received another dismal start from Corbin Martin, grabbed five hits and were started without their first substitutes after a 12-run marathon on Sunday.
Still, they won a 4-2 win against Seattle, taking advantage of the Mariners' more likely mistakes to play for Little League than the majors.
