Tesla announced today that it had launched its own Qi compatible wireless phone charger for its model 3. The new charger is in direct competition with the first charger on the Jeda market ($ 99), the new EV Annex Dual. Qi Wireless Charging Pad ($ 89), and the Nomad ($ 130), priced at $ 125.
A spokesman for Tesla said the new Qi-compatible wireless charger was designed exclusively by Tesla and not by an external provider. Like many popular cordless phone chargers for the Model 3, the Tesla brand has a black non-slip silicone surface. The sticky surface will help keep your phone in place while you tackle Tesla's traction control in all your favorite corners. Let's be honest, the car will always win and your phone will fall, but it's a noble effort.
The new charger can charge your wireless phone if it is Qi compatible or it has been equipped with a Qi compatible case. This includes all iPhones from 8 and many new and old Android phones. Check the specifications of your phone before ordering, just to be sure.
Unlike most competitive tablets, the new Tesla Wireless Phone Charger has a new lower frame for the phone case. This was not a gap in the competing pads we tested, but which should offer a more original fit and finish. The Tesla product page for the new charger indicates that it will be shipped in 2-3 weeks. However, if you are in the market for a product, it might be better to block an order now, because Tesla tends to leave its products in stock stores quite often.
Ironically, the design of the new charger highlights a constraint in Model 3: the number of USB ports located under the screen. For those considering the new charger, dual USB drives will saturate the two factory ports without any consideration for a USB drive for Sentry mode, a USB game controller or a player with music.
