"Peril!" The sensation James Holzhauer was beaten by Chicago librarian Emma Boettcher during the episode aired on Monday, ahead of Ken Jennings' record of earnings.
In a question-and-answer exchange with ESPN via e-mail, Holzhauer recalled how everything was going, his loss and the aftermath of things for the 34-year-old sports bettor who captivated the nation.
ESPN: You have a smile on your face as Monday's episode ends, slamming under your reign and preventing you from enslaving Ken Jennings as the leader of winnings all the time. Show us your emotions in the final.
Holzhauer: I was a little shaken at Double Jeopardy because I was playing from behind and I was constantly being beaten by Emma. When Final Jeopardy arrived, I knew I could only win if Emma answered incorrectly. It was as if I needed a team to miss a goal of the last second. She did not miss it, but I was still proud of my performance. I gave him a high-five and smiled how come I came.

ESPN: What did the host Alex Trebek tell you after the match?
Holzhauer: Honestly, I do not remember. He always squeezes the champion's hand first, and it was strange when he did not go straight to me. Back in the green room, one of the producers called "Field!" to get Emma's attention and I turned my head reflexively to answer. It was at that time that I was struck by the fact that I am no longer "champion".
ESPN: What is the first thing you did after leaving the plateau that day?
Holzhauer: I took an Uber to meet my wife and child and we had some good tacos, then we went to the Getty Center.
ESPN: You had a funny tweet to have a party after losing to your daughter. What are the party plans?
Holzhauer: One would have thought that I would have already planned the party, but it is difficult when one can not invite anyone without spoiling the results! I'm sure this will include a good dessert.
ESPN: You were in an interesting position knowing how your series ended (and how much you won) while seeing your brand name grow in real time. How is it compared to what you were hoping for?
Holzhauer: "Peril!" is a bigger problem than I thought. Fame came much faster and stronger than I had imagined. I think I mostly kept it at a level where I am comfortable and happy.
ESPN: Have you had conversations with Ken Jennings? If so, when did they take place and what did the conversations look like?
Holzhauer: I exchanged emails with Ken on how to handle "Jeopardy!" Overnight. celebrity. He gave a lot of useful tips, and he really seemed to be excited to finally see someone doing a serious race to his records.
ESPN: What are your plans for your winnings?
Holzhauer: I've already started giving to non-profit organizations for children in the Las Vegas area. I would also like to have a good family holiday in Spain and Portugal to defeat the summer heat of Vegas.
ESPN: And after? Are there other game shows on which you would like to participate?
Holzhauer: "Peril!" has my broadcast rights for a while, even if they agree that I play American Ninja Warrior or WWE Raw. You may be able to see me again soon on television.
ESPN: What did you learn about yourself through all of this?
Holzhauer: I am a person who really hates to lose, but I learned that I am proud of my place in the history of the series, even if it is not at the absolute top of the pyramid.
