Seagate has unveiled two new hard drives with a capacity of 16 TB and for once, it's not just about data centers.
The Exos X16 and IronWolf / IronWolf Pro models address two different audiences (data center for the first user and NAS users for the second one) and have a SATA or SAS interface for the first and SATA only for the second one. model.
Provantage sells Exercises (ST16000NM001G) for just over $ 620, while the IRONWOLF one (ST16000VN001) costs about $ 590 at Connection.
Both use Helium technology and enjoy a five-year warranty (the IronWolf has three); they also share the same rotation speed (7200 rpm), the same standby power (5 W), the average latency (4.16 ms) and the cache memory (256 MB).
The Exos range supports MTBF (average time to fail) at 2.5 million hours and has a higher sustained transfer rate at 261 Mbps; The IronWolf Pro and the IronWolf reach respectively 250 and 210 Mbps. Note that the IronWolf Pro is also provided with the rescue services, very useful for data recovery.
More goodness coming from 16 TB
Toshiba announced the 16TB MG08 series in January 2019, but we have not yet seen any stock in the chain. Western Digital is also on track to ship its first 16TB hard drives, based on MAMR technology rather than Seagate's HAMR technology.
While SSD prices are falling, they are still much more expensive than their hard disk counterparts. The Micron's 9300 Pro costs nearly $ 2800, almost five times more expensive, although this gap has practically disappeared for capacities of less than 1 TB.
